Many women who have had an abortion know, that talking about their experience is not so easy to do. According to the 2008 Washington Post about “30 percent of women (effectively, one in three) will have an abortion by the age 45.” Those numbers provided are almost half of the woman who participated in the survey. With this collected data and the research in numbers, this poses a really good question. Why are woman ashamed to talk about their abortions? If it happens so often, it should be talked about.
For my profile, I want to share the story of Sister Celibacy. She is a well-known YouTuber that shares her abortion stories with the world through her YouTube channel. Although I don’t entirely agree with her reasons as to why she decided to abort her pregnancies, I wanted to share her story because she was brave enough to talk about them.
Sister Celibacy a well-known You-Tuber uploaded her abortion story on May 6, 2017 titled Story Time/I had 3 abortions. In her video she goes on to believe that “fear, judgments, religious beliefs and self-guilt” are reasons that shamed her from telling her experience. Although it took some time, Celibacy has overcome those negative feelings by accepting her faults and courageously sharing her story with the world. She is a perfect example to all women who have dealt with similar situations.
Sister Celibacy's (YouTuber name) first abortion happened with her very first boyfriend. She had been with her boyfriend for a little over two years and described her relationship as an unhealthy one. In a separate video called, Time I got Arrested Celibacy shares the experience of finding out she was pregnant while her boyfriend was in prison. She shares with her eight thousand subscribers more of the situation stating, “It was just me, outside of the pregnancy, alone.” With minimal support from her family Celibacy decided that an abortion was the best option for her. For anyone who has struggle with unfortunate situations similar to Sister Celibacy know that a decision to abort is not an easy decision. Despite what other woman say including opinions from the media.
Celibacy drove many miles to receive the abortion. The process took her two days and took a big impact on her emotional health. She shares via her YouTube video, “After I got that abortion, it was like I didn’t care about anything! I was like I’m just going to do whatever I want to do and I did.” Many people believe that having an abortion doesn’t affect women in any way. This has been proven to be false.
Having an abortion can affect women’s emotional health. The American Pregnancy Association shares with us some of those effects are: “Regret, Anger, Guilt, Shame, Sense of loneliness or isolation, Loss of self-confidence, Insomnia or nightmares, Relationship issues, Suicidal thoughts and feelings, Eating disorder, Depression and Anxiety.” These are all leading factors that continue to support the reason as to why abortion is a difficult topic to talk about. Healing from the abortion process took a couple of months for Celibacy as she turned to guidance from her faith.
Celibacy second abortion came after giving life to her son. She shares “God told me to have him, so I had him.” Five months later she found out she was pregnant again. Pressure to keep this child came from the child’s father, she states, “We were not in a financial place to care for another child, and for that reason I voiced that I wanted another abortion” Her boyfriend and his family retaliated with hate in anger. She shared through email with me “I was called very inappropriate names by his family, I was told I was going to hell if I aborted the baby.”
Many Christian religions today either forbid or have its limits on abortion. Celibacy being a Christian knew of the consequences that were to come. Her decision to abort the pregnancy resulted in many hurtful judgments from family, friends and church members. Celibacy fell into a state of depression after going through another abortion. She cried through her blog post, “I felt that I had betrayed the one person I looked for guidance from, God.”
During this state Celibacy turned to lust to help her cope. Celibacy met a guy from out of state and together conceived her third child. Although he was in a financial state to care for the child she didn’t feel she was emotionally stable to do so. With no hesitation she decided that she would be getting her third abortion.
Celibacy decision to abort her third pregnancy was one of the most life changing experiences. She reflects on in her past procedures via her YouTuber video. She states, “Abortion’s take a big toll on you. The first abortion they put me to sleep, the second one I was wide awake and can hear everything.” She continued to share that this last abortion was when she realized that she was using abortions as her birth control, and it was wrong of her to do so.
No matter how many abortions one goes through, it is not right to claim that individuals should have learned from their last experience. It is important though to educate women on how to protect themselves during intercourse.
Celibacy concludes that it takes some time for many women (including herself) to realize and learn from her mistakes. She shares that, “This was a learning journey” and she hopes that her experience along with her YouTube support will help woman in general to talk more openly about their abortion experiences. Doing this will help society today understand the need of funding for more resources for women, specifically pregnant women. Regardless of the hateful judgments women will receive because they have chosen a abortion, ultimately having an abortion is your right to do so. Celibacy continues by stating, “We must not be ashamed of our experiences! We must share them because woman out there need to hear it!"
